Ouray County Baseball is a local, 501(c)3 registered non-profit organization that currently supports baseball teams for the youth aged 4-14 in our county.
Since 2016, a dedicated group of volunteers in Ouray County has created a little league baseball program from the ground up. Before that, parents were shuttling their kids 45 minutes to Montrose multiple times a week to practice and play games in a separate league. Now, we have 7 teams for the various age groups, with 90 kids playing ball every spring. We are fielding teams from T-ball through age 14, and playing 6-15 games per season with other rural communities around the region. Our travel team schedule includes games against teams from Hochkiss, Naturita, Paonia, and more. We are working hard to initiate our high school baseball team in the future and will then have full teams practicing from ages 04 through 18.
The benefits for our rural community are striking. The kids are practicing team building and have developed a cohesive group. With a core group of local kids, they can play outside of scheduled times with pickup baseball in the classic American sandlot tradition. It’s not just about baseball – baseball in Ouray County is building community cohesion through interactions between the players and parents.
OCB has done this all on a shoestring budget with dedicated coaches and volunteers.
These accomplishments are striking in a rural community with a population of 5,000 – and we believe we can do more!
